The Guardianship Services, Inc. staff trains volunteers to serve as court-appointed guardians for adults 18 years and older who have been declared incapacitated
by a Judge with Probate jurisdiction. Many of these individuals have been neglected, abused, or exploited. All are unable to make prudent decisions on their own behalf.
Volunteers advocate for their clients and enhance their lives by handling their personal and, if necessary, financial affairs.
So far this year, 154 people have committed to accepting this volunteer assignment. GSI represents over 200 clients.
The more challenging cases are always directed to staff members for stabilization;
but once stabilized, many clients are better served by the volunteer
serving as guardian. As court-appointed guardians, volunteers visit the client regularly, make placement decisions, arrange for medical care, manage finances, and advocate for quality care. Volunteers undergo intensive training and are screened through references and criminal background checks. Volunteers commit to serving at least a year, but frequently serve for the life of the client. The one-on-one relationship between volunteer and client is critical to the well-being of persons who find themselves alone and neglected.
Guardianship is used as a last resort, only after less restrictive alternatives
have been explored. One such less restrictive option is the Money Management
program.
Who is a GSI volunteer? You, and other caring individuals living
and working in the Tarrant County area, who are willing to give of
their time to make a tremendous difference in the life of somebody less
fortunate. Find out if this rewarding volunteer opportunity is something
you would like to do by attending one of the scheduled training sessions.
