Michael 36-year-old male Guardianship Client
Michael previously lived with his mother on Hemphill Street in a run-down house with transients coming and going at all times of the day and night. He survived on a diet consisting mainly of wieners and whatever he could scrounge. It was obvious that Michael was not receiving adequate medical care at home because his teeth were rotten, and he had an aversion to going to the dentist or doctor. An attorney who had previously served as guardian referred this case to
GSI. Michael also received services from Tarrant County Mental Health Mental Retardation (TCMHMR) and had a case manager providing in-home services. After GSI was appointed guardian of the person for Michael, efforts were coordinated with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department, the attorney, TCMHMR, and GSI to execute a home rescue. A warrant was obtained, and Michael was picked up and transported to the Sherman Habilitation Center in Sherman, Texas. Michael has been at the Sherman Habilitation Center for 4 months now and seems to have adjusted well. There are plans to enroll him in a job-training program as soon as his medical procedures are completed. His guardianship is being contested in the courts by his mother, but once that is resolved, the decision to allow family to visit will be addressed at that time. The family has not been informed of Michael's location because of previous problems they have caused with the
Probate Court system and local law enforcement agencies.
