Mr. Johnson 69-year-old male Guardianship Client
Mr. Johnson was with his dog when the police picked him up. He was walking in the middle of the highway at midnight. When asked where he was going, he replied to purchase some dog food. The police took him home. His home was an apartment full of filth and fleas, little food, and an abundance of cans of dog food. Mr. Johnson refused assistance, although an obviously cancerous spot on his face needed immediate attention. Having notified the proper authorities, it was determined that Mr. Johnson had a son. This son lived in a new home and was aware of his father's predicament. He just did not feel it was his problem. With the son unwilling to assist, Volunteer Guardians (GSI's predecessor) was asked by Adult Protective Services to locate a volunteer to make prudent decisions for Mr. Johnson and move him to a more sanitary and safe environment. A volunteer was appointed by the Probate Court of Tarrant County to handle Mr. Johnson's financial as well as personal affairs. Upon investigation, it was determined that Mr. Johnson's family received the major portion of his income. This was changed immediately, and Mr.
Johnson was able to move to a comfortable, supervised home. Moreover, he was able to take his dog with him. He received medical attention immediately through the Veterans Administration. He now
receives three hot meals a day and makes frequent trips around town for an ice cream cone.
