Clients in the Money Management Program have problems managing limited financial resources. As result the clients are experiencing a crisis in one or more areas – no electricity, water or gas; lack of food; inability to obtain needed medicine; and financial exploitation. Clients are still able to decide where to live and to make informed choices regarding healthcare. Volunteers visit the clients in order to monitor financial activities and day-to-day needs and to assist in making sound financial decisions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Make regular and meaningful visits to the client (weekly or every other week, depending on the situation)
· Work with the case manager to ensure client’s basic needs, including food, are being met.
· Deliver allowance to client as needed.
· Work with client to be sure that he/she is keeping receipts to account for the expenditure of the allowance.
· Monitor for financial exploitation.
· Provide transportation if necessary.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Volunteers help GSI make sure the client is receiving the best possible service. They assist us in meeting standards set by the Social Security Administration and various funding sources by doing the following:
· Contact the case manager if there is a change in the client’s status.
· Submit monthly activity reports.
· Assist, as needed, in the preparation of annual reports.
TRAINING AND SUPPORT
Money Management volunteers attend a three-hour training session in which staff members present information about the following topics:
· Understanding the Money Management Program
· Bill Payer Program requirements and responsibilities
· Representative Payee Program requirement and responsibilities
· Guidelines for the Money Management Volunteer
· Public Benefits and Community Resources
· Federal Programs Overview
In addition to the initial training, volunteers are required to participate in quarterly in-service training sessions. Each client presents unique problems and opportunities. Case managers want to work closely with the volunteers to explore options and take actions that will be good for the client and that will be supportive and protect the volunteer from liability.
