Clients in the Money Management Education Program are adults whose primary diagnosis is mild intellectual disabilities and who have the potential to learn how to handle their own money. As the client’s volunteer, you will monitor your client’s financial activities and assist him/her in making sound financial decisions. The purpose of the Money Management Education Program is to promote independence.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Make regular and meaningful visits to clients (weekly or every other week, depending on the situation).
· Assist the assigned clients in maintaining their finances. This includes:
o Assisting in budgeting each month.
o Seeing that bills are paid.
o Ensuring that bank accounts are balanced and reconciled to statements.
· Monitor for financial exploitation.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Good communication between GSI staff members and volunteers is essential for ensuring that clients are protected from exploitation or neglect and that the volunteers are protected from liability. All volunteers should:
· Contact the GSI case managers immediately regarding any significant changes in the client’s status.
· Submit monthly activity reports.
TRAINING AND SUPPORT
Money Management Education volunteers receive the same training as other Money Management volunteers. They also are encouraged to attend in-service training sessions. Money Management Education staff members are available to answer questions and provide technical assistance as needed.
