FAQs
  1. How much time does serving as a volunteer require?
The amount of time may vary from client to client, but most volunteers spend approximately one hour each week on volunteer activities. More time may be required initially to establish rapport with the client or in times of crisis. Staff members are always available to supplement volunteer time.

  2. How are clients referred to the programs?
Guardianship clients are referred from the Probate Courts. Hospitals, agencies which provide in-home services, Adult Protective Services, nursing homes and other interested parties contact the courts to begin the court-initiated guardianship process. In order to make a referral to the guardianship program, click here.

Money management referrals also come from in-home service agencies, churches, residential facilities, MHMR, or the Social Security Administration. Interested parties may make a referral by calling the agency or by faxing or e-mailing a referral form.

  3. How long does it take GSI to be appointed as a guardian
The Probate Code requires that a guardianship hearing be held no sooner than the Monday following the expiration of a 10-day waiting period that begins when the potential ward has been served with notice and citation. Investigation and preparation of reports and applications can take two weeks to a month before citation is served. In emergency situations, a temporary guardianship may be obtained more quickly. A contested guardianship will usually take longer.

  4. How long does it take GSI to become Representative Payee for someone’s government benefit
This may vary depending on the government agency. Usually, if GSI gets the proper paperwork to the Social Security Administration during the first half of the month, the agency will receive a check for that client at the beginning of the next month. The length of time it takes to become a Payee is also affected by the amount of time required to obtain the medical evidence of need.
